A BROKEN LINK is a survey of contemporary German, UK and Australian practices in artist film and video. The program attempts to explore the similarities and differences of aesthetics and conceptual concerns of these videos from the three countries, presenting the films together in a public screening.
A BROKEN LINK reflects on how digital technologies bring people and ideas together but also reinforce the essence of distance and alientation. In presenting works from distinct geographical locations--Australia, German and the UK--in screenings of works back-to-back, digitality is mobilised as an antidote to physical jetlag, creating cognitive dissonance as viewers slip from one notional cultural/time zone to another.
In the context of identity being increasingly reified online, the increasing technological mediation of our relationships and the tendency for digital cultures to project beyond physical borders, the works in the program examine tensions between individual and collective identies, and contradictory notions of place and locality. In presenting works from 2007 onwards--the year Apple launched the first iPhone--A BROKEN LINK surveys a crucial period in the emergence of digital imaginaries.
A BROKEN LINK präsentiert zeitgenössische Künstlerfilme aus Australien, Großbritannien und Deutschland. Ziel des Programms ist, Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede der Ästhetik und konzeptionellen Anliegen der Künstlerfilme aus den drei Ländern zu untersuchen, indem die Filme in einer Zusammenschau einem Publikum präsentiert werden. A BROKEN LINK reflektiert, wie digitale Technologien Menschen und Ideen zusammenbringen, aber gleichzeitig Distanz und Befremdung schaffen. Indem Künstlerfilme aus drei unterschiedlichen geographischen Regionen in einer fortlaufenden Filmvorführung gezeigt werden, wird Digitalität mobilisiert, um kognitive Dissonanz anstelle eines physischen Jetlags zu erzeugen, wenn Zuschauer von einer imaginären kulturellen/zeitlichen Zone in eine andere gelangen.
Wie stehen Ort und Lokalität im Zusammenhang oder Widerspruch von Identitäten, die sich mehr und mehr online vergegenständlichen? Im Interesse des Programms stehen auch die zunehmende technologische Vermittlung unserer Beziehungen und die Tendenz digitaler Kulturen jenseits physischer Grenzen zu wirken. A BROKEN LINK präsentiert Werke seit 2007, dem Jahr als Apple das erste iPhone auf den Markt brachte, und untersucht damit einen wichtigen Zeitraum beim Aufkommen digitaler Vorstellungswelten.
