Role of Greyspace: exhibition curated and project-managed by Claire Taylor
Scope of project:
- To enhance and enrich the experience of exploring Cockatoo Island and build in existing cultural initiatives there;
- Provide a high-quality contemporary art event to attract visitors to the island outside of the Biennale of Sydney calendar;
- Create opportunities for mid-career NSW-based artists to develop large-scale temporary artworks in the complex historic site;
- Build key partnerships to promote the exhibition to a wide audience.
- Responsibilities included:
- Fundraising (including making applications to private philanthropic organisations as well as public funding bodies, and direct appeals to benefactors) and subsequent reporting.
- Securing project partners and sponsors (including media sponsors).
- Developing the artwork documentation for approval by the Harbour Trust prior to installation, carrying out all the related risk-assessments, and, because the site is Heritage Listed, negotiating with the Harbour Trust’s Conservation Architect (in consultation with the artists).
- Organising the transport logistics; coordinating the exhibition volunteers (approx. 50); oversight of site-safety during bump-in and bump-out; oversight of fabrication and installation of all the works; and inspection of the condition of the works prior to the exhibition being opened to the public and progressively throughout the exhibition.
- Organising the exhibition launch, public program, and catalogue launch.
- Drafting public communications, editing all promotional materials, and providing media interviews.
